We are so excited! After months of anticipation, preparation, and hard work, our dream is finally becoming a reality. We leave tomorrow morning, Saturday, September 14th, at 7 am. To get to this point, we have fundraised our butts off, spent days searching for a vehicle online and hours on the phone with car insurance companies, and sent countless emails to people across the country. Already we have learned so much and are so grateful for our experiences. | (This is how excited we are) |
Feeling empowered after our self defense class | We are particularly thankful for our experience taking a Women’s Self Defense class here in Santa Barbara. Now we are ready to kick some butt! (Only if we have to) We are very thankful to Teri, our teacher, for reminding us what strong and powerful individuals we are! Check out their studio here: http://sbwselfdefense.com/home/ |
Our mode of transportation will be a 1998 Dodge Ram Campervan rented from a wonderfully sweet man named Andy in Los Angeles.
It is spacious and well-taken care of, does not have too many miles, and we are renting from the original owner. Our mechanic friend and housemate checked it out and said there were no issues, and it was just serviced two weeks ago.

…. and Andy brought us a traditional iced tea from Taiwan to refresh us on a hot day!
On Wednesday, Andy met Molly at the Burbank airport, where they drove to drop him off at his mom’s house and discuss all the intricacies of the vehicle before she drove it back to Santa Barbara. While this vehicle is not biodiesel, and indeed is a little bit of a gas-guzzler, we are happy to have something comfortable and reliable, and we will offset our carbon for this trip.

Our very first stop will be Casa de Paz, an incredible cooperative home in the middle of East Oakland. Casa de Paz is part of Canticle Farm, an urban farm that aims to shift our industrial-growth society to a life-sustaining society.

Quote from their site:
“In a neighborhood where despair and violence has often been one of the common responses to our urban challenges, people living at Casa de Paz at the Canticle Farm strive for integral nonviolence and support activities that foster fearlessness, courage, autonomy, unconditional love and compassion for all beings.” http://www.awakin.org/local/oakland/ |
You can see why we want to visit them! Many amazing people live at Canticle Farm, but we have had the fortune of communicating with one in particular, Pancho. Pancho is like a modern-day Gandhi. Read this article to see what we mean: http://www.dailygood.org/view.php?sid=127
In short, we are very excited. From the Bay Area, we will head to Davis, Sonoma, Cobb, Mendocino, and finally Humboldt before we leave this magnificent state to explore Oregon, Washington, and eventually the entire Northern half of the country. Wow! It's really happening!
As always, we are so thankful for all the support from our friends and family. We would not be here today if it wasn't for the help and support of so many!
